Lagos govt prohibits permanent use of dealer number plates by drivers

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its ban on drivers and car sellers using dealer number plates on a regular or permanent basis.

This was said in a statement released on Sunday in Lagos by Mrs Bolanle Ogunlola, Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation.

Ogunlola cautioned drivers and car dealers not to use dealer number plates for anything other than what is allowed by law.

According to her, dealer plates were confined to certain, time-limited activities under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

She claims that allowed test drives, car inspections, vehicle delivery or collection, and the transportation of unregistered vehicles are examples of permitted applications.

According to her, such transportation must go straight from ports or licensed dealer locations to specific destinations.

“Their use for private daily commuting, continuous operation on public roads, or on vehicles already sold is prohibited,” Ogunlola said.

She mentioned that 175 cars had been seized by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) for breaking dealer number plate laws.

According to Ogunlola, the automobiles will be investigated further and the dealer plates found in the impacted cars would be seized.

She issued a warning that vehicles using unauthorised, fraudulent, disguised, or incorrectly used registration numbers will be subject to enforcement action.

She claims that impoundment and prosecution under applicable traffic statutes are examples of punishments.

The director urged drivers and car dealers to abide by all rules pertaining to the usage of dealer number plates.

According to her, the policy was created to encourage responsibility, precise car identification, and road safety in Lagos.
