Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso leaves South Africa, gets five-year entry ban

The Department of Home Affairs confirmed on Sunday that Timothy Omotoso, a Nigerian televangelist who was recently cleared of rape and human trafficking charges, has left South Africa and will not be allowed to return for the next five years.

Omotoso, the leader of the Jesus Dominion International Church, was spotted at OR Tambo International Airport over the weekend getting ready to leave; according to sources, he is expected to reach Lagos, Nigeria by 8 p.m. local time.

His departure occurs almost a month after the Eastern Cape High Court cleared him of all charges, including rape, sexual assault, human trafficking, and limiting the movement of his followers, charges that had kept him in prison for eight years.

Omotoso's departure follows a May 10 appearance at the East London Magistrate's Court for immigration-related issues. He was released shortly after, raising speculation that his departure was imminent.

The case garnered national attention and harsh criticism from civil society and rights organisations who claim that the verdict denied justice to survivors.

His co-accused, Lusanda Solani and Zikiswa Sitho, were also acquitted but could face renewed charges depending on the outcome of an appeal being prepared by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Following the controversy, the NPA launched an internal investigation into the case's handling.
