Truck accident kills two at Badagry Expressway, Lagos

On the Badagry Expressway in Lagos, a pedestrian and a biker were struck by the driver of a highly loaded bucket truck.

The event happened on the main carriageway of the expressway at the Iyana Iba Flyover, which leads into Lagos State University's (LASU) main gate.

The truck driver was allegedly driving at full speed from the Volkswagen end of the road toward Badagry when he struck a pedestrian, according to preliminary findings by security personnel.

The motorist allegedly tried to escape the incident by continuing to drive along the corridor instead of stopping.

A motorcycle and another person reportedly pursued the truck in an attempt to halt it and force the driver to deal with the fallout. But during the pursuit, the truck driver is said to have crashed into the motorcycle, instantly killing the rider while the second passenger managed to get away unharmed.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that members of its Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team quickly reached the site after being stationed along the route for regular traffic monitoring and emergency response.

According to the agency, its representatives removed the motorcyclist's body, which had gotten stuck under the truck's front tire.

Following his arrest by LASTMA officials, the truck driver was turned over to security officers stationed at the PPL Police Post in Okokomaiko, together with representatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Accident and Emergency Response Team, for additional investigation.

The pedestrian's body was given to family members who had come to the scene after learning of the event, while FRSC authorities removed the motorcyclist's remains.

Both the damaged motorbike and the bucket truck involved in the collision were relocated to the PPL Police Post until the investigations were being completed.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, sent his sympathies to the victims' families.

He characterized the event as a painful reminder of the risks connected to careless driving, particularly among truck drivers and articulated vehicle operators who disobey traffic laws and safety precautions on key routes.
