16 dead, many wounded as gunmen attack Benue communities again
In separate invasions across Otukpo and Kwande Local Government Areas (LGAs), suspected armed herdsmen have attacked communities in Benue State, killing at least 16 people and seriously injuring dozens more.
During the attacks, which took place between Monday and Tuesday, the attackers also stole motorcycles from farmers who were trying to escape.
At least 14 persons were killed and numerous more were shot when the terrorists allegedly invaded the Efeyi hamlet in the Ugboju District of the Otukpo Local Government Area at around 4 a.m. on Tuesday. This was the bloodiest incident.
According to a local source, the number of fatalities may increase because search and rescue operations are still ongoing and numerous individuals are still unaccounted for.
He described the situation as heartbreaking, saying, “The current situation in Efeyi Ugboju is pathetic. The attack started around 4am, and three hours later there was no response from the security agencies. The army and police stationed at Ugboju Ogobia had not reached the community to protect innocent citizens. We are helpless and vulnerable, but we still look onto God.”
Mr. Maxwell Ogiri, the chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, confirmed the incident and stated that 14 bodies had been found thus far, while other injured victims were being treated.
He said there was no provocation involved in the attacks on the victims. "Many people are injured, and 14 dead bodies have been found. The only goal was to kill innocent people and spill blood; there was no provocation.
“The people are afraid, and there is great apprehension. Residents of neighbouring communities are already fleeing,” Ogiri said.
