28 students expelled from UniAbuja over misconduct, drug offences
28 students have been expelled by the University of Abuja's (formerly Yakubu Gowon University) Senate for offenses ranging from drug use to exam malpractice and other serious misconduct.
Following consideration of the Student Disciplinary Committee's findings, the decision was made at the institution's 191st regular Senate meeting.
Dr. Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, revealed the situation in a statement released on Sunday.
According to the statement, “The Senate of the University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of twenty-eight students over various disciplinary offences.
“The affected students were found culpable of serious misconduct, including assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the university portal for admission, as well as possession and use of hard drugs.”
Additionally, the Senate authorized the revocation of certificates previously granted to 15 former students who disregarded the disciplinary committee's repeated invitations.
Additionally, 33 students received warnings for offenses like hostel racketeering, conspiracy, and fighting, while nine students were exonerated of any culpability following investigations.
Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi responded to the development by stating that the university will not lower its standards or put up with behavior that could jeopardize campus safety and academic integrity.
