28-year-old suspect killed in Delta, police arrest officer involved

Usman Nuhu, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), has been detained for the murder of a 28-year-old suspect in Effurun, Delta State, on Sunday, according to the Delta State Police Command.

A popular video on social media earlier on Tuesday depicted the suspect being shot while being detained by a Delta police officer.

Before being shot by a police officer wearing a mufti, the suspect is shown in the less than two-minute footage sitting on the ground with his hands bound behind his back with a rope.

The officer has been moved to the force headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary actions, according to a statement released on Tuesday by Bright Edafe, the Delta police spokesperson.

The suspect, named as Mene Ogidi, was slain after being caught while trying to waybill a package purportedly containing a weapon loaded with four rounds of ammo, according to Anthony Placid, the force public relations officer, who also confirmed the development.

“Preliminary reports indicate that operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to credible information from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway regarding a suspect apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition,” Placid said.

“While efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in clear violation of extant regulations, resulting in the death of the suspect.”

According to Placid, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) leadership has ordered the officer and his squad to be transferred right away to Abuja, where they would be subject to summary disciplinary actions and potential prosecution by the force disciplinary committee.
