33 suspects arrested in Makurdi over killings in Benue
33 people from Northern Nigeria were arrested by the Benue State Government when they tried to move into a private villa at Gyado Villa after arriving in Makurdi in two buses.
Concerned locals and youth leaders immediately reported the unusual arrival, which caused terror in the community. Barns Dzege and Villa Suites staff even made a distress call to the government.
The Benue State Commissioner for Works and Housing, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, the Chairman of Makurdi Local Government, the Chairman of ALGON, and security personnel seized the site for control and verification in a rapid action.
Speaking on the development, Asortar James Asortar, the Governor's Special Assistant on Social Media, said that the 33 individuals were allegedly employees of a fictitious non-governmental organisation and had been brought into the state by a company that was only created on May 8.
“Upon arrival at Villa Suites, it was discovered that all 33 individuals were brought in that same day from different northern states,” James stated.
“Initial interviews revealed that most of them could not speak English, and their purpose for settling in a private house within the community remains unclear. Security operatives have taken them into custody for interrogation to determine the true nature of their mission in Benue.”
He went on to say that the Villa Suites employees and Gyado Villa kids' alertness prevented what might have been a major security violation.
Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Executive Governor of Benue State, responded by expressing gratitude for the community's prompt intervention.
“We thank the youth of Gyado Villa and the Villa Suites team for sounding the alarm on time. Your vigilance is deeply appreciated. This incident further underscores the importance of staying alert and reporting anything suspicious,” Governor Alia said in a statement.
