60 suspects arrested over drug abuse in Yobe

In a joint operation clampdown on drug dealers and abusers in Damaturu, Yobe, at least 60 suspects have been arrested.

Mr. Saidu Jakusko, the State Government Focal Person on Drug Abuse Control, informed reporters in Damaturu on Thursday that the operation, which involved vigilance group members and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) personnel, resulted in the arrest of 30 men and 30 women.

He explained that the clampdown was necessary due to the alarming rate of drug abuse, particularly among the state's youth.

“The first phase of the operation targeted some flashpoints within the state capital and will continue until the menace is brought under control,” he said.

According to Jakusko, the majority of the suspects were under the influence of hard drugs when they were taken into custody, including three infamous drug dealers who had previously been on security personnel's watchlist.

According to him, those who were found to be non-indigenous would be sent back to their home states after the arrested people were screened.
