Abuja High Court grants Sowore N200m bail

Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist, was granted new bail of N200 million by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, weeks after his previous bail was revoked due to his inability to show up for trial.

In a decision, Justice Muhammad Umar ordered Sowore to produce two sureties prior to the bail going into effect.

The second surety must have land in the Federal Capital Territory, while the first must be a traditional leader of his community.

The defendant was also instructed by the judge to leave his foreign passport with the court registrar while the case was being decided.

After approving the application, Justice Umar gave Sowore to his attorneys and postponed the case until Monday, July 6, when the defendant is scheduled to present his defense.

The Department of State Services is prosecuting Sowore on suspicion of cybercrime after he allegedly called President Bola Tinubu "a criminal" in social media posts.

He has entered a not guilty plea and refuted the accusations.

On June 16, after Sowore did not show up for court, the court revoked his bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
