Akure court orders arrest of Ondo commissioner for assaulting magistrate
Seun Osamaye, the state's commissioner for women's affairs, has been placed under arrest and detained by a magistrate's court in Akure, Ondo state, for allegedly attacking chief magistrate Temitope Alphonso.
The magistrate was allegedly on official assignment at the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs when the claimed attack took place on the ministry's property. The commissioner was accused of "assault" by the police, according to NAN.
The chief magistrate was allegedly verbally and physically attacked by the commissioner during the official engagement, according to an affidavit attached to the accusation.
The magistrate's decision, which the commissioner considered unfavorable, is said to have preceded the alleged assault. The commissioner was not present in court on Wednesday, but her attorney, A.K. Adewusi, represented her.
Osamaye was being treated in a hospital in Ilara-Mokin, Ifedore LGA, Ondo state, Adewusi informed the court. In order to provide evidence, the attorney asked for the case to be put on hold for one hour and thirty minutes. The magistrate approved the request.
Following the restart of the proceedings, the defense attorney provided a medical report detailing the commissioner's hospital stay.
The prosecutor, Suleiman Adebayo, questioned the veracity of the medical report. The magistrate, Damilola Sekoni, dismissed the medical report in his decision, stating that it did not show that the commissioner was hospitalized or medically incompetent to appear in court.
Sekoni further stated that important information such as the time and date of admission were missing from the medical report.
Citing disrespect for the court, the magistrate ordered the commissioner's arrest and remand in the correctional facility. For a follow-up hearing, the case was postponed until January 12.
