Angela Okorie granted ?5m bail as management denies cyberstalking

Nollywood actress Angela Okorie was granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday. Okorie is accused of cyberstalking, threatening, and harassing her coworker Mercy Johnson under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act. After the actress entered a not guilty plea to the seven-count indictment, Judge Emeka Nwite granted her N5 million bail with one surety in the same amount.

According to the court's ruling, the surety must be a Grade Level 13 public official who will provide pertinent employment documentation and an affidavit of means. In addition, the judge ordered Okorie to stay in the Suleja Correctional Center until her bail was completed and postponed the trial to March 23, 2026.

Okorie had been taken into custody, arraigned, and then remanded. The actress was taken into custody by agents of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center in Abuja, according to Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi, despite early reports suggesting she was detained by agents of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department. Filmmaker Ajemba Stanley confirmed the development by revealing that Okorie was charged in court on the same day she was taken into custody and later placed under remand.

The actress entered a not guilty plea to each allegation during her arraignment. The judge denied the bail plea made by her attorney, Alex Ejesieme, and placed her on remand until her official bail application was heard.

The Nigeria Police Force has charged Okorie with conspiring with Ifeoma Mbonu, who is still at large, to slander and cyberstalk Mercy Johnson in 2024 through posts on TikTok and Instagram. It was claimed that the accused offenses violated the Cybercrimes Act of 2015.

Mercy Johnson's attorney filed a petition accusing Okorie of posting remarks meant to seriously harm her reputation and cause mental anguish. "Blood sucking demon no see blood suck again, e say na slimming tea," was one of the posts included in the petition. If God doesn't exist, then go beg people to ruin their houses and slice off their futures; otherwise, there won't be any peace for the wicked! You won't be saved by gospel music. You have a black heart!
