ASSU Akwa Ibom State University branch begins indefinite strike
At Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike in response to protracted disagreements about unpaid pay, benefits, and the application of the N80,000 minimum wage.
This was revealed by ASUU-AKSU Chairman Dr. Frank Namso yesterday at a press briefing held at the university's Obio Akpa Campus.
According to Dr. Namso, the union repeatedly attempted to contact the state government and the institution's management before the strike, but these attempts were unsuccessful.
On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 12 a.m., the union congress unanimously decided to go on strike indefinitely until their demands were fulfilled.
According to him, “This action aligns with the resolution passed at the recent ASUU National Delegates Conference, which authorizes any branch to embark on industrial action if salaries are unpaid by the third day of a new month.”
The non-payment of driver's and domestic staff allowances, the non-implementation of the N80,000 minimum salary and arrears, and the insufficient funding for other particular allowances are the main causes of the strike.
The fraudulent payment of a ?2,000 hazard allowance, the failure to implement salary awards of 35% and 25%, the delays in national promotions and payments, and the failure to pay for postgraduate lectures and supervision are more issues.
Dr. Namso also brought attention to the fact that academic staff have been denied driver and domestic servant allowances for thirteen years, but non-teaching staff are still eligible. The union called this situation "disheartening" and said it urgently needs to be reviewed.
