ASSU halts academic activities in Ondo University over payment of outstanding salaries
In response to the Ondo State Government's failure to pay unpaid salaries and arrears, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA branch, has instructed its members to resign from their positions.
Journalists were given access to the notification, which was jointly signed by Dr. Olusegun Taiwo, the secretary, and Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi, the branch chairperson, on Sunday.
The action was made in response to a resolution passed by the union's Congress on Thursday, August 21, in which members unanimously decided to halt academic operations until the government fulfilled its financial commitments.
“Sir, by this memo, our members have been directed to withdraw their services from all academic activities in the university until all our outstanding salaries and arrears are paid,” the notice partly read.
ASUU-AAUA is a member of the Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-owned Tertiary Institutions, or ODSTI, which announced a 14-day warning strike in June. This action follows that strike. The union clarified that the protracted disregard for workers' wellbeing in spite of repeated requests to the state administration was what prompted that walkout.
