ASUU announces indefinite strike in LASU, other Lagos universities

On Tuesday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which is part of the Lagos State Government-owned Universities Joint Campus Group, announced a complete and permanent walkout at all three of the state's state-owned universities.

Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology are the institutions impacted.

According to the union, the strike came after the state government was given a 14-day ultimatum on August 31, 2026, but the government failed to provide a viable answer or a clear plan.

The statement was signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman of ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUSTECH.

Despite its final warning on September 10 that "silence is no longer an option," the union said the move was taken because the state government failed to start a dialogue before the deadline of September 13 passed.

"Full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities" is still its major goal, according to the statement.

The union claims that the demand contains important welfare provisions for active and retiring academic workers as well as the introduction of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance.

The statement read, “Following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on 31 August 2026, the Academic Staff Union of Universities Joint Campus Group—comprising Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology—hereby declares a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action effective immediately.”

According to ASUU, the strike would continue until the state government signed, domesticated, and fully executed the relevant articles of the 2025 agreement and serious engagement resulted in a satisfying conclusion.
