If the federal and state governments do not act quickly to resolve unresolved concerns that impact university lecturers, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has vowed to continue its statewide strike.

Due to the poor execution of the December 2025 agreement, the failure to repay billions of naira withheld from lecturers' wages, and the payment of the remaining 3.5 months of withheld salary, ASUU stated that it could resume the strike "without any further notice."

Following an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council at the University of Abuja, the union's president, Christopher Piwuna, wrote a message to our correspondent early on Friday outlining the union's stance.

The December 2025 deal, according to ASUU, was the result of nearly eight years of talks and efforts, but the federal government and numerous state governments had not yet fully implemented it.

“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to FULLY and COMPREHENSIVELY address issues bordering the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics, ASUU-NEC will not accept any blame for calling out its members on a nationwide strike action within the shortest time possible,” the union warned.

The administrations of Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Katsina, and Borno were complimented for starting to implement the accord, as was Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State.

The union warned other states to take action before their universities were thrown into a "industrial crisis of monumental proportions" and stated that Kano, Edo, Plateau, Taraba, Gombe, and Bayelsa had also promised to start implementation in September or October.

Regarding unpaid pay, ASUU urged the prompt release of the remaining 3.5 months while acknowledging that the Tinubu administration had paid four of the 7.5 months withheld during the Buhari administration.
