Auto crash in Ogun leaves 10 people dead, six injured
A traffic accident at the Saapade bridge on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway resulted in ten fatalities and six injuries.
Afolabi Odunsin, the Federal Road Safety Corps' Ogun State Sector Command Public Relations Officer, stated in a statement that the collision involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number EKY 290 YM and a white Sinotruk truck with an unidentified registration number.
“A total of 18 persons were involved in the crash, comprising 15 adult males, 2 adult females, and 1 male child. Sadly, 10 persons lost their lives, comprising 9 adult males and 1 male child, while 6 persons (4 adult males and 2 adult females) sustained varying degrees of injuries. Two adult males escaped unhurt,” he said.
A preliminary inquiry, according to the Corps, found that speeding, improper overtaking, and reckless driving were the causes of the collision.
” The truck driver reportedly reversed on the highway after missing his direction, while the approaching bus, travelling at high speed, attempted to navigate through the limited space available and rammed into the truck.”
“FRSC rescue operatives arrived promptly at the scene and evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara”
“Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, have taken custody of the crashed vehicles, while arrangements have been made for their evacuation.
Oludare Ogunjobi, the Sector Commander, expressed sympathy to the relatives of the dead and wished the injured a quick recovery.
However, he issued a strong warning to drivers—especially truck drivers and commercial drivers—about driving recklessly, speeding excessively, reversing on roads, and other life-threatening traffic infractions.
