Auto crash on Third Mainland Bridge kills one, injures four

Two Toyota Sienna buses collided head-on on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday, killing one adult female and seriously injuring four other passengers.

Early in the morning, the collision happened close to Iyana-Iworo.

The incident was reported to the News Agency of Nigeria by Mr. Olawale Afolabi, Head of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

The two vehicles in question were fully filled commercial buses, according to Afolabi.

He continued by saying that the wounded victims were sent right away to a trauma center in the area for critical care.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that reckless driving by another Toyota Sienna triggered the crash, resulting in a head-on collision between the two vehicles,” he said.

He clarified that in order to coordinate rescue and recovery efforts, LASEMA's Tiger Squad from the C3 Command was activated at approximately 7:26 a.m. and arrived at the scene at approximately 8:00 a.m.

He claims that in order to protect the area, control traffic, and remove the debris, LASEMA staff collaborated with police and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officers.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, called the collision avoidable and advised drivers to closely follow traffic laws.

He emphasized the necessity for prudence on major highways and collaboration with traffic managers while cautioning against reckless overtaking, excessive speeding, and poor lane discipline.
