Bala Bila returns as INEC commissioner as Tinubu appoints six others

In advance of the general elections in 2027, President Bola Tinubu has reappointed Dr. Bala Bila as a National Commissioner and nominated six individuals for positions in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Senate must screen and confirm the nominees for the two Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and four National Commissioner positions.

Professor Mustapha Aliu has been nominated to succeed Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the National Commissioner representing the Northwest, according to a statement released on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Advisor on Information and Strategy.

The current REC in Osun State, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, was nominated as the Southwest National Commissioner, and Bashir Muhammad Umar was chosen to succeed Professor Muhammad Adamu as the North-Central representative.

Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose term ends on October 24, is anticipated to be replaced by Babalola.

Tinubu proposed Zahradden Basiru Sanusi of Jigawa State to succeed Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura in the REC roles, and retired permanent secretary Dr. Samuel Akinjide Akinleye to represent Ekiti State.

According to Onanuga, the nominations were required due to openings caused by serving officials' terms coming to an end.
