Bandits attack Sokoto community, kill Chief Imam, two others

According to reports, the Chief Imam of Talluje village in Sokoto State's Bodinga Local Government Area was assassinated on Wednesday after robbers raided Talluje and nearby Chofi village, killing two other inhabitants and driving hundreds of people from their homes.

The two communities in Danchadi District were the target of the onslaught, which started at around 4:00 p.m. and lasted for almost two hours.

The event raises the number of Chief Imams in Sokoto State who have allegedly been killed by robbers in recent weeks to three.

Our correspondent was informed by local sources that the attackers launched simultaneous, coordinated attacks on both towns, firing randomly before escaping with an unknown quantity of stolen livestock.

“The attacks started around 4:00 p.m. and continued until about 6:00 p.m. The bandits killed the Chief Imam of Talluje and two other persons whose identities have yet to be confirmed,” a community leader in Danchadi said.

He added that the attacks triggered mass displacement, with residents, mostly women and children, fleeing on foot to safer areas in Danchadi and Bodinga town.

“As I speak, many people are arriving in our communities carrying their belongings after escaping from the affected villages,” the source said.

Although the precise quantity could not be immediately established, another homeowner stated that the intruders also rustled a significant number of sheep.

A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the attack and the assassination of the Chief Imam.

The officer stated, "We have received reports of the attack and have mobilized our anti-kidnapping unit to the area because there are fears the bandits may return."

Residents claim that the attackers rode motorcycles into the communities via Duma village, which borders Tureta Local Government Area.
