Bomb goes off in Lagos market
On Monday, a bomb explosion in the Shoe Materials Market neighborhood of Mushin, Lagos State, is thought to have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). At least one merchant narrowly avoided death.
The explosion was reported to have happened close to a parked car in the crowded business center, which alarmed locals and market vendors.
Security services reportedly reacted quickly, sealed off the area, and started looking into the incident.
Fatai Tijani, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the occurrence after visiting the scene and stated that initial investigations revealed an IED hidden under a car was the source of the explosion.
According to Tijani, the gadget was placed beneath the car's passenger side. "The IED was under the vehicle by the passenger side," the statement continued, adding that it exploded as the engine was started. When the car was started, it exploded.
He claims that as soon as the command learned of the explosion, police officers, including members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad, were sent out.
“We promptly deployed our EOD team after receiving reports of an explosion. The area was cordoned off and thoroughly searched,” he said.
He further mentioned that one individual was transported to the hospital for treatment after being hurt in the event. The victim was responding to treatment, he said, and his condition was still stable.
He claims that after a thorough check of the surroundings, EOD specialists verified that there were no further explosive devices nearby.
