Court frees Tunisian man sentenced to death over Facebook post

Sabre Chouchane, who was given a death sentence last week for posting derogatory remarks about President Kais Saied on Facebook, was freed by a Tunisian court.

Chouchane's lawyer, Oussama Bouthelja, verified that he was freed on Tuesday.  Public outrage and human rights issues were raised by the 56-year-old day laborer's punishment.

In Tunisia, where free speech restrictions have been strengthened since Saied's election in 2019, his verdict was unique.  Saied altered the constitution after dissolving parliament two years into his reign.

Additionally, the president has been charged with repressing political dissidents and opposition.  Chouchane's counsel further mentioned that his judgment had been appealed, which led to his release.

Prior to his arrest last year, Bouthelja had characterized his client as an ordinary citizen with little education who was merely posting critical posts about the president.

Chouchane was also charged with violating state security by posting offensive content on social media.
