Court prohibits resident doctors from commencing strike

The Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors and two of its officials were prohibited from initiating any kind of industrial action starting on January 12, 2026, by the National Industrial Court in Abuja on Friday.

In a lawsuit filed by the Federal Government and the Attorney General of the Federation against NARD, Dr. Mohammad Suleman, and Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim under the number NICN/ABJ/06/2026, Justice E. D. Subilim issued the interim injunction.

Recall that on Thursday, the Association of Resident Doctors of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, supported the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors' declaration of a complete and indefinite strike, which is set to start at 12 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Following the suspension of the association's 29-day industrial action in November 2025, the resident physicians denounced what they saw as the Federal Government's insensitivity and lack of sincerity in carrying out the Memorandum of Understanding it agreed with NARD.

The FG's ex parte application, which asked the court to prevent the doctors from calling or organizing any strike, work stoppage, picketing, go-slow, or other industrial action until a substantive motion was being heard, was approved on Friday, January 9, 2025.

Until the court hears the motion on notice on January 21, 2026, the injunction will be in effect.
