Nelly Monday, a 53-year-old lady, was given a one-month prison sentence for disposing of trash in a Lagos State drainage channel.

On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, Monday was taken into custody in Meiran for reportedly throwing trash down the drain when it was raining.

She was then arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Bolade, Oshodi, where she entered a guilty plea to the crime, according to a statement released by the Lagos Waste Management Authority on Thursday.

"Nelly Monday, 53, who was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for dumping in the drains during the rain, has been convicted of the offence," the statement said.

“She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.”

Residents were cautioned by LAWMA not to dispose of rubbish carelessly, especially in drainage channels and other unapproved areas.

According to the authority, these actions are considered environmental offences that are subject to legal penalties.

It said, “The Authority will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.

“Residents are urged to dispose of their waste responsibly and through approved channels.”

The development coincides with renewed efforts by environmental officials and the Lagos State Government to stop careless garbage dumping, especially practices that block drainage channels and cause flooding.

Residents were advised by LAWMA to follow allowed garbage disposal protocols and refrain from disposing of waste in drains and other unapproved areas.
