Court sentences Kano TikToker Murja Kunya to six months imprisonment over naira abuse

Popular TikToker Murja Kunya was sentenced to six months in prison by a Federal High Court in Kano for abusing Naira.

The social media influencer was found guilty and sentenced by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Kano Directorate on Wednesday before Kano Federal High Court Judge Simone Amobeda.

While staying in a hotel room at the Tahir Guest Palace in Kano, Kunya was detained for reportedly spraying Naira notes for amusement.

In January 2025, she was first taken into custody for breaking the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which forbids misusing or disfiguring the Naira.

The TikToker was granted administrative release by the Commission pending her prosecution before the Federal High Court in Kano.

However, when it was time for her court appearance, she absconded in her bid to dodge the legal process.

On Sunday, March 16, 2025, EFCC agents successfully re-arrested Kunya following weeks of intense investigation and monitoring.  On May 20, 2025, she was arraigned and entered a guilty plea to the modified one-count charge.
