Court sentences Simon Ekpa to six years in prison for terrorism in Finland
The pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa was given a six-year prison sentence for terrorism offenses by the Päijät-Häme district court in Finland. Ekpa was found guilty by the court on Monday of inciting terrorism and taking part in terrorist organizations' operations.
According to the Finnish daily Yle, the court claimed that between August 2021 and November 2024, Ekpa had inflamed tensions in the southeast part of Nigeria by using his "significant social media following."
The three judges on the court unanimously ruled that Ekpa was a key figure in a militant separatist organization that sought to actually carve out a Biafra state from Nigeria.
Additionally, the district court stated that Ekpa had "through his network of contacts in the region, and he was also found to have encouraged his followers on social media platform X to commit crimes in Nigeria" by providing firearms, explosives, and ammunition to specific groups.
Ekpa was also found guilty by the court of severe tax fraud and Attorneys Act violations.
Ekpa claims to be a follower of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who are prohibited from the country.
