Court sentences three for cyber fraud in Kwara

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Ibrahim Ajisafe Oladimeji, Hassan Abdulmalik Temitope, and Babatunde David Olusegun were found guilty and sentenced for fraud-related charges by Federal High Court Justice Abimbola Awogboro in Ilorin.

The three were charged separately with impersonation and cybercrime by the EFCC's Ilorin Zonal Directorate, according to a statement released on Wednesday by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The charge against Temitope reads: “That you, Hassan Abdulmalik Temitope (alias: Jane), sometime in 2024, within the Judicial Division of the Federal High Court, did fraudulently impersonate one Jane via your created 2 Backpage account with the intent to obtain, and did obtain, from one John Gary the gross sum of $2,500 (Two Thousand Five Hundred United States Dollars), thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 22 (2) (b) (ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (2) (b) (iv) of the same Act.”

After being read the charges, the accused entered a guilty plea.  In order to persuade the court to convict and sentence the defendant appropriately, prosecution attorney Rashidat Alao led witnesses in presenting evidence, such as extrajudicial comments and objects found at the scene of the arrest.

On each accusation, Oladimeji was given a 150-hour community service term by Justice Awogboro, which he was to do five hours a day without the possibility of a fine.

Oladimeji also gave the federal government $100 (one hundred US dollars), which was the proceeds of his crime, and his iPhone 12 Pro, which was found to be the tool of his crime.

Temitope received a sentence of 700 hours of community service, five hours a day, without the possibility of a fine.

He gave the federal authorities his iPhone 12, which he used for his illegal activity, and a 2009 Toyota Camry, which he used to finance his crime.  In lieu of a fine, Olusegun was sentenced to 150 hours of community service, five hours a day.

In addition, he gave the federal government $75 (seventy-five US dollars), the proceeds of his crime, and his iPhone 12, the tool he used to commit it.
