Court sentences two to jail for abusing naira notes in Lagos

Babatunde Olaitan and Tobilola Olamide, collectively known as TobiNation, were each given a six-month prison sentence by Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court in Lagos for tampering with naira notes at a social gathering.

Following their arraignment on separate one-count counts for violating Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007, which forbids the spraying and mutilation of Nigerian currency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission won their conviction on Thursday.

Olaitan was charged with splattering N200 notes while dancing at a social event on April 8, 2025, at 23 Macdonald Road, Ikoyi.

At the same location and on the same day, Olamide was likewise charged with the same crime.  Both of them entered guilty pleas to the accusations made against them.

After their pleas, Ibrahim Bukar, an EFCC investigating officer, examined the facts with EFCC prosecutors C.C. Okezie and H.U. Kofar-Naisa.

He informed the judge that the commission launched an inquiry on April 10, 2025, after seeing a TikTok video of Olaitan, better known as TDollar, splattering banknotes.

According to Bukar, “The convict reported to the Special Operations Team on May 5, 2025, and in his statement, admitted he was gifted a bundle of N200 notes by a fan at a night club, which he sprayed on others.”

The agent claimed that after showing Olaitan and Olamide the film, they made remarks, which were later accepted as proof.  The prosecution urged the court to convict and punish the two after examining the evidence.

Olaitan and Olamide were both sentenced to six months in prison with the possibility of a N200,000 fine each after Justice Owoeye agreed.
