Death toll hits nine in Lagos three-storey building collapse
Nine people have died as a result of the collapse of a three-story structure at Alakija, Old Ojo Road, close to Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town.
At before 11 a.m. on Thursday, the structure, which is part of the Ori-Ade Local Council Development Area (LCDA), collapsed, prompting a large rescue response.
In order to find survivors and retrieve victims buried beneath the debris, rescue teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) were sent to the location right once.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, firefighters from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station assisted other emergency services in the rescue effort after arriving on the scene at approximately 11:49 a.m.
The three-story residential building that fell was home to multiple residents at the time of the event. Cyber cafés, a photo studio, mobile phone repair shops, telecommunications outlets, a bookshop, and office spaces were among the commercial establishments it housed.
The building has been in the neighborhood for more than 30 years, according to the locals, making it one of the oldest.
While displaced residents battled to retrieve personal possessions from the wreckage under the supervision of emergency officials, emotional scenes unfolded at the scene as bereaved relatives lamented the victims.
Late into the day, rescue and recovery efforts persisted, with emergency personnel searching through the debris to make sure all victims were located and to protect the area from potential threats.
Investigations are anticipated to start following the conclusion of rescue efforts, but authorities have not yet established the precise reason of the collapse.
