Delta Police arrest man for buying gun through social media
After being discovered in possession of a Beretta pistol, the Delta State Police Command detained a suspect for allegedly using social media to purchase an illegal firearm.
In a video posted on Tuesday, SP Bright Edafe, the state police public relations officer, revealed this information. He warned against the growing trend of illicit arms acquisition while showcasing the weapon that was found from the suspect.
"This is a Beretta pistol, not even fabricated," Edafe declared as he revealed the contents of a backpack the suspect was carrying. It has two 9mm rounds and the magazine, emphasizing that only authorized security agencies are permitted to use such weapons.
During questioning, the suspect, Igbunu Evans from Sapele, Delta State, acknowledged that he bought the gun over Snapchat, stating that he "ordered it through Snapchat from a smoke vendor" and paid N450,000 for its delivery.
The suspect admitted to being involved in online fraud, saying he had been doing so for "three to four years," but he also said that he had acquired the firearm "for safety purposes..." against any unknown shooters or kidnappers.
In response, Edafe connected the development to a series of illegal activities, pointing out that "internet fraud, cultism, abuse of illicit substances, and now gun possession" demonstrate how "one crime gives birth to another."
The Beretta handgun "is a prohibited firearm that can only be linked to government security agencies," he emphasized, adding that no one is allowed to carry such weapons under the pretense of self-defense.
