DSS frees three suspects wrongly detained for banditry
Three individuals who were wrongly jailed by the Department of State Services (DSS) on suspicion of kidnapping and banditry have been freed.
The three people who were detained in June of this year—Umar Ibrahim, Alhaji Bello Rabiu, and Jaja Sarki Bamo—were ordered to be released after the DSS examined their cases and determined that they were not guilty of the charges.
Oluwatosin Ajayi, the Director General of DSS, also authorized the individuals who had been wrongfully jailed to receive N3 million in compensation.
It was learned that the DSS leadership's attempts to guarantee justice for victims of the agency's previous errors include the release of the three individuals and the payment of compensation.
Many wrongly held individuals have now been released by the new DSS administration, while those deemed accountable are facing trial in various courts.
“The DG DSS is an honourable man who acknowledges errors and rectifies them swiftly. He attempts to ensure due process is followed to ensure the right thing is done. This is why he has sustained efforts in reviewing cases under the agency’s jurisdiction,” a senior official familiar with security establishments said.
The accused revealed that they received humane treatment throughout their incarceration while thanking the DG DSS.
“We were properly fed, and we were not abused in any way. The officers ensured that our needs were met, and we cooperated throughout the investigation till we were finally released,” one of the freed victims, Ibrahim, said.
