As part of continuous efforts to look into and stop alleged financial crimes, agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, have detained over 20 suspects after conducting a search on a short-term rental apartment complex in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

A senior EFCC official confirmed the operation and said that investigations were still ongoing. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on the topic publicly.

Early on Monday, July 27, the intelligence-driven operation took place at Mariton Apartments, Plot 30, QMB Road, Ikate, Lekki.

The official claims that after receiving reliable information, EFCC agents moved in and captured a number of people, the identities of whom have not yet been made public while investigations are ongoing.

“The operation was intelligence-driven. Yes, a number of suspects were arrested and investigations are continuing. We are profiling those arrested and examining items recovered during the operation. Further details will be made public at the appropriate time,” the source said.

Before apprehending more than 20 individuals, EFCC officials searched other flats within the building, questioned residents, and found objects thot to be pertinent to the inquiry, according to sources familiar with the incident.

The identities of those detained and the precise offenses under investigation have not yet been made public by the anti-graft agency.

In the meantime, other tenants claimed that some of the complex's units might have been utilized for illicit activities and crimes involving the internet. Nevertheless, the EFCC has not formally connected any suspect, apartment owner, or resident to any criminal offense, and the claims have not been independently confirmed.
