EFCC arrests Abuja businessman over alleged $120m fraud
Innocent Ezuma, a 57-year-old businessman from Abuja, has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on charges of defrauding a Ukrainian investor of over $120 million.
Ezuma was detained by the commission as of Tuesday after being taken into custody at his Abuja home on Monday, October 19.
When contacted on Tuesday, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest but declined to provide any additional information.
However, according to sources, the businessman was under investigation for alleged advance fee fraud, criminal conversion, criminal breach of trust, obtaining money under false pretenses, theft, and money laundering.
One of the sources claims that between 2007 and 2015, Ezuma allegedly received millions of dollars from the Ukrainian investor for unfulfilled power and mineral exploration projects.
While investigators were looking into transfers totaling billions of naira to businesses and people connected to the businessman, including his children, the source claimed that the funds were diverted for personal use.
