EFCC detains 30 suspected internet fraudsters near Kwara polytechnic

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), 30 alleged online scammers, including six Kwara State Polytechnic students, have been detained in the Agbede village of Ilorin.

The management of the polytechnic said in a statement on Wednesday that several students protested on campus after security personnel raided the adjoining town of Agbede early in the morning.

“Early this morning, a small number of students expressed their displeasure by burning tyres along a section of the Old Jebba Road,” the statement reads.

“The incident stemmed from reports of security operatives carrying out official duties in the nearby Agbede community, an action that reportedly caused concern among some students of the institution.”

However, the administration stated that no student was detained during the operation, pointing out that the institution's internal security team and security agencies' prompt action stopped the protest from getting worse.

However, the EFCC said in a statement on Thursday that agents from its Ilorin zonal directorate conducted a sting operation in two local buildings that had been reported for possible online fraud on Wednesday.

Thirty suspected internet fraudsters were apprehended as a result of the raid, including six polytechnic students, according to the anti-graft agency.

According to the commission, initial profiling revealed that the six pupils were "actively involved" in online fraud.

“The profiling of the students showed that all the six students are actively involved in internet fraud. Eight vehicles suspected to be proceeds of crime were recovered from the suspects, alongside mobile phones and laptops,” the statement reads.

The EFCC made it clear that the operation had nothing to do with the polytechnic, pointing out that its agents did not enter the building or interfere with any educational activities.
