Enugu nabs fake doctor, shuts down illegal hospital
A phony physician has been detained by the Enugu State Ministry of Health, and an unlicensed hospital in Obollo-Etiti, Udenu Local Government Area, has been closed for endangering the lives of its patients.
In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Ugodu Avemaria, the ministry claimed that Prof. George Ugwu, the Commissioner for Health, oversaw the operation that revealed startling evidence of the facility's unfit and unhygienic conditions.
According to the statement, the phony physician was identified as Mr. Kenneth Mamah and his facility, St. Joseph Memorial facility, Ada-ulo Obollo-Etiti Community.
“The enforcement team, acting on credible intelligence and complaints from concerned residents, stormed the facility recently, where they discovered that the owner has been conducting surgical procedures in his consulting room and other medical practices in an environment grossly unfit for any form of operative care.
“The self-proclaimed doctor had no medical licence, no professional training, and no authorisation from the state ministry of health,” Avemaria said. “Despite this, he routinely performed surgical operations, endangering the lives of residents who unsuspectingly sought care.”
The statement claims that after the phony doctor had been posing as a qualified medical practitioner for years, the locals were startled to learn who he really was.
According to the announcement, Dr. Amaechi Mgbodile, Director of Medical Services, stated that "the closure aligns with the state government's broader campaign to eliminate quackery, ensure patient safety, and enforce minimum standards across all health facilities" throughout the procedure.
