FCT doctors receives 13-month hazard allowance, wage award
Resident physicians in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have praised Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the FCT, for approving the payment of a one-month wage award and 13 months' worth of hazard allowance arrears. They see this as a clear sign of his commitment to the welfare of the region's healthcare workers.
The Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCTA) wrote a letter of appreciation dated January 15, 2026, which was shared in a statement released on Tuesday by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media.
Dr. George Ebong, President of ARD-FCTA, and Dr. Yusuf Israel Lissa, General Secretary, jointly signed the letter in which the association commended Wike for his leadership and response to the long-standing welfare concerns of resident physicians.
“We write to formally express our profound appreciation to the Honourable Minister, HE. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, for your exemplary leadership and commitment to the welfare of healthcare workers, as demonstrated by the payment of the longstanding 13 months hazard allowance arrears as well as the payment of one month wage award,” the letter read.
The intervention was timely, according to the doctors, who also noted that it demonstrated the minister's commitment to "equity, fairness, and the recognition of the sacrifices made by doctors and other health workers in the course of service in the FCTA."
Additionally, they stated that the payments had increased confidence in the FCT Administration's approach to healthcare governance and raised morale among resident physicians.
The group further reiterated that it is prepared to continue working constructively with the FCT Administration to advance the health sector.
“Our Association remains committed to constructive engagement and collaboration in advancing the FCT health sector and ensuring the continued delivery of quality healthcare services to the populace,” the resident doctors stated.
