FCT police enforce ban on tinted glass, impounds over 30 vehicles
As it began enforcing the ban on tinted automobiles around Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has seized over thirty vehicles for operating with tinted glasses, hidden number plates, and invalid registration.
Ahmed Sanusi, the FCT Commissioner of Police, told reporters at the command on Friday that the operation was intended to address the increasing usage of these cars by criminals engaged in violent crimes, kidnappings, and one-chance robberies in the region.
He claims that Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, has authorized the command to implement the prohibition.
According to intelligence assessments, criminal elements purposefully utilize tinted cars and hidden license plates to conceal their identities, avoid discovery, and thwart law enforcement attempts, according to Sanusi.
He said: “The IG has given us the mandate to begin the enforcement of the ban on the use of tinted vehicles and other offences as earlier stated.
“Intelligence reports at the disposal of the command indicate that many criminal elements deliberately use such vehicles to conceal their identities, evade detection, and frustrate law enforcement efforts. This poses a serious threat to public safety.”
The police commissioner clarified that the enforcement action was carried out in response to an order to start enforcing rules that forbade the use of tinted glasses and other traffic infractions that might facilitate criminal activity.
He claimed that as a result, the command had initiated a thorough operation to target vehicles that were breaking the rules.
“This exercise is not intended in any way to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, but it is to deny criminals the cover they exploit to operate crimes against innocent citizens and the FCT residents at large,” Sanusi stated.
He revealed that the operation had already resulted in the seizure of around thirty automobiles.
