FCTA workers commence indefinite strike, closes offices
Following an indefinite strike announced by their umbrella union, the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC), employees of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) secretariat have closed all of their offices.
The union said that unresolved welfare issues and the authorities' purported inability to respond to long-standing demands were the reasons behind the industrial action, which began on Monday, January 19, 2026.
The union noted that an earlier ultimatum set on January 7 expired without any significant interaction from the management in a statement dated January 8 and jointly signed by JUAC President Rifkatu Iortyer and Secretary Abdullahi Saleh.
The non-payment of unpaid promotion arrears, delays in the conduct and release of promotion exercises, and the ongoing extension of service for retiring directors and permanent secretaries are among the issues, according to JUAC. The union said that the practice was preventing serving officers from advancing in their careers.
Additionally, JUAC warned that the administration's failure to submit mandatory deductions, such as pension contributions and National Housing Fund payments, could endanger the future well-being of impacted employees.
The union also voiced its displeasure with the results of the 2024 promotion exams, claiming that a sizable portion of its members were adversely impacted and characterizing the process as essentially unsuccessful. JUAC insisted that the walkout would last until its demands were fulfilled.
