FEC authorises gratuity for federal civil servants

A new exit benefit plan that gives departing federal civil officials a gratuity equal to 100% of their gross yearly salary has been authorized by the Federal Executive Council. This was revealed in a statement released on Thursday by the Federation's Office of the Head of the Civil Service.

It stated that the program, which went into effect on January 1, 2026, is intended to ensure that officers who have served the country for at least ten years retire with financial security and to reinforce the welfare structure of the federal civil service.

It clarified that the office's interministerial technical committee's recommendations were followed by the approval.

She claims that in order to create a sustainable foundation for the program, the committee collaborated with the National Pension Commission, the Federation's Budget Office, and the Federation's Office of the Accountant-General.

She noted that the new exit benefit was intended to improve retirement income security for federal government officials in treasury-funded ministries, extra-ministerial departments, and agencies.

It was designed to supplement the current Contributory Pension Scheme. Didi Walson-Jack, the head of the federal civil service, praised the council for endorsing the plan.

She called it a daring action that made it evident that President Bola Tinubu's administration valued the commitment, selflessness, and expertise of federal employees.

“This approval is a profound acknowledgement of the invaluable contributions of our civil servants who have devoted their productive years to public service and national development.

“The exit benefit scheme significantly enhances the retirement package of our officers and boosts confidence in the federal government’s commitment to their welfare,” she said.
