Federal government to make 112 Nigeria's single emergency

In order to finalize plans for the countrywide deployment of 112 as Nigeria's single emergency phone number, the Federal Government has declared its intention to collaborate with state governors and emergency response agencies.

Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), made the revelation in a statement released on Thursday.

The announcement came after Vice President Kashim Shettima and a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), headed by Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, Chairman of its Governing Board, met at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.

The meeting took place soon after the Vice President-led National Economic Council (NEC) authorized the use of 112 as the nation's single emergency contact number for all federal, state, and local government agencies in an attempt to create a coordinated national emergency response system.

In order to enhance emergency response coordination across the country, Shettima gave the NCC instructions during the meeting to create a thorough implementation plan and work with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“He assured the delegation that the project would be sustained, noting that the required funding would be mobilised through the National Economic Council and the private sector.

“The Vice President also called for high-level engagement and commitment from emergency responders to drive the successful implementation of the 112 initiative,” the statement read.
