FG charges six suspected coup plotters to court
Six people have been charged by the federal government for organizing a coup to remove President Bola Tinubu.
On Wednesday, the individuals were charged with 13 counts of alleged terrorism. Each of them entered a not guilty plea to the accusation.
Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi requested that the defendants be placed under remand in the Department of State Service (DSS) after the arraignment. In addition, he requested an expedited hearing from the court.
The sitting judge, Joyce Abdulmalik, denied some of the attorneys' oral requests for their clients' bail and instructed them to submit formal petitions instead.
The first defendant, Muhammad Ibrahim Gana, has filed for bail, but he was only able to serve the prosecution in court today, according to Muhammad Ndayako, his attorney.
In order to return and move the application, he requested a brief adjournment. The position was supported by other defendants' attorneys.
Senior attorney Sunusi Musa, who represented Islamic cleric Abdukadir Sani Zaria, the sixth defendant, commended the AGF for requesting that the accused be placed in DSS custody.
He said that since he was transferred from the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) facility, where no one was permitted to see inmates, the DSS had been "very civil" and respected his client's rights.
