FG pays 8-month CONTA arrears to non-academic workers

To boost industrial peace and avoid academic disruptions, the Federal Government has disbursed eight months of backlogged Consolidated Non-Academic Staff Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CONTA) to non-academic employees across federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Announced on Wednesday by Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, the payments cover the period from January to August 2026 and follow closely on the heels of the Consolidated Academic Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CATA) paid to academic staff two days prior. Together, these disbursements reflect the administration's push to address worker welfare and stabilize the academic calendar.

Alausa emphasized that clearing the arrears underscores the government's appreciation for the vital role non-academic workers play in keeping higher institutions running smoothly.

The minister emphasized that supporting and motivating both academic and non-academic staff is vital for maintaining stable higher institutions and developing the skilled workforce needed for national growth.

He noted that resolving these backlog payments aligns with broader government efforts to address legitimate staff grievances, foster workplace harmony, and keep academic activities running without interruption.

Reiterating the administration's resolve to strengthen institutions driving Nigeria's human capital, Alausa stressed that a reliable higher education system is crucial for socio-economic progress.

He assured stakeholders that the Ministry of Education will maintain ongoing dialogue with unions, school administrators, and key partners to address remaining concerns, while urging continued collaboration from all parties to support ongoing sector reforms.
