One business in a two-story commercial structure at Akolapo Plaza along Oro Road, near Taiwo Oke district of Ilorin, Kwara State, was hit by a fire that broke out on Wednesday night.

The Kwara State Fire Service responded quickly to the event, which happened at approximately 4:19 p.m., and their staff were able to contain the fire before it got out of control.

Hassan Adekunle, the agency's public relations officer, released a statement on Thursday stating that only one store was seriously damaged in the incident, which occurred in a commercial building that housed roughly eighteen stores.

“The Kwara State Fire Service responded to a fire outbreak at No. 3, Akolapo Plaza, Oro Road, off Taiwo Oke Area, Ilorin, at about 16:19hrs on Wednesday, 25th March 2026.

“The incident involved a two-storey commercial building comprising about eighteen shops, out of which one shop was affected by the fire,” Adekunle said.

He pointed out that the firefighters' timely arrival and well-coordinated efforts were essential in limiting the damage to a single shop and stopping the fire from spreading to other areas of the building and surrounding premises.

“Firefighters promptly arrived at the scene and, through swift and coordinated efforts, successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to other shops within the plaza and adjoining properties,” he added.

According to preliminary investigations, an electrical malfunction connected to a solar power installation was the origin of the incident.

“Investigation revealed that the fire was suspected to have been caused by a spark from the wiring of a solar power system used to supply electricity to the building, which ignited nearby combustible materials,” the PRO further disclosed.

Alabi Muhammed, the service's director, responded to the tragedy by advising business owners and property owners to put safety first, especially while utilizing alternative power sources.
