Fishermen recovers body of Lagos photographer after vehicle plunges into lagoon
The body of a photographer who was in the car that crashed into the lagoon on Saturday from Lagos' Third Mainland Bridge has been found. Days prior, local divers and rescue personnel had also recovered the body of the female driver—whose identity has not yet been made public—from the water.
Reports state that the accident happened at approximately 5:11 a.m. close to the Rapid Response Squad checkpoint on the way into Iyana Oworo, Ebute Meta.
Confirming the development on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said, “The second victim’s body was recovered yesterday (Tuesday).”
The female driver's body was only recovered, according to witnesses, after her distraught family paid fisherman N400,000 before they consented to plunge into the lagoon.
In an open letter to the Lagos State Government, social media user @dee-ah voiced his displeasure with the way the event was handled.
She wrote, “It is with a heavy heart that I write this. Yesterday, tragedy struck close to home. We lost a promising young lady, the niece of my best friend, in a car accident that resulted in the car plunging into the lagoon.
“The circumstances of the crash remain unclear, but what is more painful is the response that followed. LASTMA and Marine Police were at the scene, but there was no meaningful rescue effort.”
She claims that devastated family members had to rely on local fishermen who located the submerged car but refused to act until they were paid.
