Former Kano governor Ibrahim Shekarau resigns from PDP

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State, resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, alleging a "strategic political realignment."

Shekarau announced his resignation with immediate effect in a letter dated April 19, 2026, sent to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Kano State's Nassarawa Local Government Area.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.

The former minister stated that the decision was made ahead of a planned transfer to a different political party and that it came after lengthy discussions inside his political group.

“This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group, to pursue our political career in a different political party,” Shekarau stated.

He conveyed gratitude to the ward-level party leadership.

“I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he added.
