At the age of 89, Hajiya Saratu Shagari, the late former president Shehu Shagari's last surviving wife, passed away.  

Captain Mohammed Shagari (retd.), the late President's eldest son, announced her passing in a statement on Monday, stating that she passed away at precisely 3:00 p.m. following a protracted illness.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Hajiya Saratu Shehu Shagari, the last surviving wife of the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto,” the statement read.

Captain Shagari described his mother as “an embodiment of grace, humility, and quiet strength who lived a life of dignity and service.”

Funeral plans would be disclosed later, he said.  Hajiya Saratu, who was born in Sokoto, led a mostly secluded life while helping her husband advance in his career as a teacher, regional minister, and the first democratically elected executive president of Nigeria.
