Four Oyo princes takes Alaafin to court

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has been brought before an Oyo State High Court in Oyo town by four Oyo princes.

In a lawsuit with the number HOY/18/2026, the claimants, Ladigbolu Moshood Adegboyega, Owoade Olaide Tesleem, Adeyemi Sikiru Adesina, and Adeyemi Akinade Adebayo, are requesting that the court prohibit the monarch from attending or taking part in events and activities that would place him beneath any Yorubaland oba.

The plaintiffs are requesting "an order of perpetual injunction restraining the monarch from acting in any traditional and official position which will make him to be subservient and inferior to any Oba in Yorubaland," according to court documents dated February 6, 2026, which The Nation was able to view yesterday.

The claimants specifically ask the court to uphold the Alaafin stool's historical significance and superiority over other Yorubaland kings, while also restricting his involvement in activities that can be seen as disparaging the stool.

The members of the broader royal family are likely to appear in person or through representation in a case brought against him.
