Four-storey school building collapses in Lagos
A four-story building housing a school in Lagos' Ogba neighborhood fell on Monday, just minutes after the students and instructors had fled the building, narrowly avoiding tragedy.
Around noon, the building at 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital in Ogba's Aguda axis, which housed Yemco Nursery, Primary, and Comprehensive College, collapsed.
According to witnesses, the structure collapsed just minutes after teachers and pupils were rushed from the property, averting what locals regarded as a certain catastrophe.
According to a resident, folks in the neighborhood were alarmed when wooden planks were believed to have fallen from the roof earlier.
“The students narrowly escaped the incident. It was just about three minutes after they were evacuated from the building that the structure collapsed,” the resident said, adding that the structure had not shown obvious signs that it was about to give way.
The witness claims that an old guy in the neighborhood warned the school administration that the building might be dangerous, which led to the residents' prompt departure.
Later, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service officials secured the area and limited access. A portion of the residential property was still standing next to the fallen building. As of the time of this report, no casualties had been reported.
An official statement regarding the incident has not yet been released by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
