Fubara defects from PDP, joins APC
The governor of Rivers, Siminalayi Fubara, joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During a stakeholders' meeting at the government house in the state capital of Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Fubara declared his defection.
According to Fubara, he joined the ruling APC as a "gesture of reciprocity" for President Bola Tinubu's unwavering collaboration, support, and encouragement of his administration since the state's political turmoil in late 2023.
“We can’t support Mr President if we don’t fully identify with him; not backyard support,” the governor said.
“So, we have taken that decision today since we have gotten a pass. Everyone here, who followed and suffered with me, our decision today [is that]we are moving to APC.”
Less than a week after fifteen members of the Rivers state house of assembly, including speaker Martin Awaewhule, joined the APC, Fubara defected.
The 32-member Rivers legislature encouraged President Bola Tinubu to run for reelection by passing a vote of confidence in him two days prior to the defection.
With Agbu Kefas of Taraba and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau intending to join the APC, the PDP now has six governors following the defection.
