An unknown group of armed men attacked the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State, on Sunday, killing an unknown number of people.  

When the attackers allegedly opened fire on gullible community members, locals reported seeing fear and mayhem.  While some victims escaped for their lives, others suffered fatal injuries.

One source said, “The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack; the attack has left our community shaken.”

Other locals who spoke about the development said they were still in disbelief, and many of them demanded more security.  

It was chaos, according to an eyewitness close to the incident.  This evening, the attackers appeared out of nowhere in a commando-like manner and began firing randomly.

“The police have launched an investigation into the attacks and are working to apprehend the perpetrators.”

Members of the neighborhood were seen fleeing for their lives while several dead victims lay in a pool of blood on the ground in video footage of the tragedy that is currently doing the rounds online.  

Chief Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, confirmed the development in a press statement on Sunday. He stated that investigations have started to identify the perpetrators and that pertinent security authorities have already been alerted.
