Gunmen attack FUTO, kill Polaris bank manager, abduct female students

Polaris Bank has expressed sorrow over the death of one of its branch managers, Mr. Ossy, who was shot and killed at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, Imo State, by alleged kidnappers. 

The Owerri-based banker was reportedly bringing his kids to the university when the incident happened on Sunday, September 6, 2026. It is also stated that two female students were kidnaped during the event. 

The dead was attacked by thugs while driving his kids to the university, according to a statement released by Polaris Bank on Tuesday and signed by Rasheed Bolarinwa, Head of Brand Management and Corporate Communication. 

According to the bank, he was slain in the incident, but his children were able to flee.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of our Branch Manager and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time.

“The unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday, when he was accosted by the hoodlums, and while the children managed to escape from the scene, he was not that lucky,” the statement said.

The bank expressed confidence that the circumstances surrounding the killing will be determined and stated that the matter was being looked into by the appropriate law enforcement organisations.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family of the deceased, and we respectfully urge the public to allow the authorities to complete their investigations,” it added.

In the meantime, FUTO's administration acknowledged that two female students were allegedly kidnaped and that a visitor to the university was shot and killed during the incident.

The institution stated that the event happened on Sunday and that security officials were looking into the facts in a statement signed by Registrar Chinonso Uba.
